Your Credit Report by Age: How Malaysian CTOS Scores Change Through Life

Your Credit Report does not stay the same across your lifetime. The score at the top of it rises, dips, and rises again depending on where you are in life and how much of your income is committed. That shape follows a surprisingly consistent pattern across Malaysian borrowers.

Based on CTOS data across credit-active Malaysians, here is how the average CTOS Score moves through the decades, and what it says about your Credit Report at every stage.

The Age Curve at a Glance

  • 18 to 24: 602 (Low band)

  • 25 to 29: 612

  • 30 to 34: 612

  • 35 to 39: 612

  • 40 to 44: 617

  • 45 to 49: 625 (Climb begins)

  • 50 to 54: 643 (Approaching Fair)

  • 55 to 59: 665 (Fair band)

  • 60 to 64: 686 (Fair, close to Good)

  • 65 to 69: 705 (Good band)

Scores stay relatively flat from the mid-20s to the mid-40s, then climb steadily. By the late 60s, the average has risen more than 100 points from where it started.

18 to 24: The Quiet Advantage of Having Less

At 602, young adults score higher than you might expect. That is largely because their Credit Reports carry less debt: fewer active credit facilities, smaller commitments, and limited exposure to bigger financial responsibilities.

The catch: Many in this bracket have “thin” Credit Reports—there is not much history for lenders to assess. Building credit gently at this age, through a modest credit card used and repaid responsibly, sets up a stronger Credit Report for the years ahead.

25 to 44: The Mid-Life Squeeze

Across the 25-to-44 range, average CTOS Scores hover around 612 to 617 with little movement. This is the flattest stretch of the whole curve.

Financial responsibilities pile up all at once here: first housing loans, car loans, higher credit card use, childcare, and family support. All hit together, often against income that has not yet grown to match.

If you are in this bracket and your Credit Report feels stuck, you are not alone. This is genuinely the toughest financial decade for most Malaysians.

45 to 54: The Turning Point

Around age 45, the curve changes shape. Averages start rising, from 625 at 45–49 to 643 at 50–54.

Smaller loans get paid off, housing balances shrink, years of clean repayment history build up in the Credit Report, and income tends to peak. The climb through this decade is one of the most reliable patterns in the data.

55 to 69: The Peak Years

From 55 onward, the numbers keep climbing. Averages rise from 665 (55–59) to 686 (60–64) to 705 (65–69), moving from Fair into the Good band.

Borrowers here tend to have long, clean Credit Reports, fewer active loans, and predictable income. The 65-to-69 group at 705 sits in Good territory, above where most working-age Malaysians ever reach.

What This Means at Any Age

  • In your 20s? Start building your Credit Report now. A modest credit card paid in full each month builds the foundation your future self will lean on.

  • In your 30s or 40s? A flat score is normal. Focus on paying every commitment on time and keeping credit card utilisation low. You are protecting the Credit Report you will need for the climb ahead.

  • In your 50s? The payoff for years of a well-maintained Credit Report starts appearing. Keep going.

  • In your 60s or beyond? Your Credit Report is likely in the strongest position of your life. Great for refinancing or supporting family applications as a guarantor.

A Note on These Numbers

These averages come from CTOS’s internal database of credit-active Malaysians, reflecting people with active credit facilities. Your own Credit Report depends on your individual repayment behaviour, credit usage, and full record, not just your age.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a good CTOS Score for my age in Malaysia?

Below age 45, the national average sits around 612 to 617. Above 45, averages climb steadily, reaching 705 by ages 65 to 69. A Credit Report scoring in the Good band (697 to 717) or higher is strong at any age.

Why do Malaysians in their 30s and 40s have the lowest average CTOS Scores?

This is the life stage with the heaviest financial commitments: housing loans, car loans, childcare, credit card use, and family responsibilities. Credit Reports stay flat until major loans start being paid down in the late 40s and 50s.

Do older borrowers really have stronger Credit Reports?

On average, yes. Credit-active Malaysians in their 60s tend to have long, clean Credit Reports, fewer active loans, and lower credit utilisation. The average CTOS Score for the 65 to 69 group is 705, compared to 622 nationally.

Does checking my own Credit Report affect my score?

No. Checking your own Credit Report through CTOS is a personal inquiry with no impact on your CTOS Score.
